About Dr. Reed

Over the course of more than 35 years as a health professional, I have had the privilege of engaging in nearly every sector of health and medical care, including serving  as the Commissioner of Public Health for the District of Columbia; the Senior Vice President for Programs of the March of Dimes Foundation; the President of the Charles R. Drew University of Medicine and Science; the Senior Vice President for Professional Standards of the AMA; the Executive Vice President and Chief of Medical Affairs for UnitedHealth Group, a Fortune 25 Health and Wellbeing Company; and now as the Managing Partner of Tuckson Health Connections.

My vision of comprehensive, multi-disciplinary, and integrated health care is regularly reinforced by my appointments to leadership roles at the National Institutes of Health; National Academy of Medicine; numerous Federal Advisory Committees; and Academic Boards.  At the National Institutes of Health, I currently serve on the Clinical Center Research Hospital Board and previous service includes my appointment to the National Advisory Council for Complementary and Integrative Health; the Advisory Committee to the Director of the National Institutes of Health and Co-Chair of the Advisory Committee to the Director’s Working Group on Diversity. I am an elected member of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, currently serving in a leadership position on the Health Sciences Policy Board; Co-Chair of the Digital Learning Collaborative; and a member of the Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning Working Group and their Business Action Collaborative. My previous leadership roles include Chair of the Committee on Post-Disaster Recovery of a Community’s Public Health, Medical and Social Services; a member of the Committee on Ensuring Patient Access to Affordable Drug Therapies; the Forum on Medical and Public Health Preparedness for Catastrophic Events; and the Committee on the Consequence of Uninsurance, among others. I have served in Federal Advisory roles as a former Chairman of the Secretary of Health’s Advisory Committee on Genetics, Health and Society; as well as several U.S. Government cabinet level health advisory committees concerned with health reform, infant mortality, children’s health, violence, and radiation testing. My engagement on academic boards includes my current service on the Board of Trustees at Howard University, where I Chair the Health Sciences Committee; and a former member of the Board of Trustees at Rockefeller University.

Currently, I am the Chairman of the Board of Directors for ViTel Net, LLC, a leading innovator in telehealth solutions; I serve on the Board of Directors of LifePoint Health, a leading hospital company dedicated to providing high-value care and services to growing regions, rural communities and vibrant small towns across the nation; Cell Therapeutics, Inc., a public corporation concerned with the development of cancer pharmaceuticals; and Inform Genomics, Inc., a private company focused on developing novel platforms of genomic-based personalized medicine products for cancer supportive care.

I am Vice Chair and Secretary of the Board for the Alliance for Health Policy; a member of the Boards of AcademyHealth and the People-Centered Research Foundation; an Advisory Board Member at Johns Hopkins Berman Institute of Bioethics and EVERMORE; and a member of the MITRE Health Advisory Committee. I continue to provide consulting services with UnitedHealth Group, among others.
