The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services reminds us that you only have until February 15, 2015 to enroll for health insurance coverage. Last year, I was dismayed by the number of people that I met who missed the deadline and were shocked to learn that they had to wait for the next enrollment period. This was especially true for so many young and poor people.
HHS is recommending that people in need of health insurance coverage take the time to visit HealthCare.gov to review options for their 2015 coverage, noting that if someone signs up between now and January 15th, their coverage will be effective on February 1, 2015. Enrollment is open until February 15, 2015.
Also, HHS reminds folks that if they signed up for coverage previously through the Marketplace in an open enrollment, please return to HealthCare.gov to update their application and review available coverage options now, or prior to, the end of Open Enrollment. This is your opportunity to review your current coverage selection or to change your coverage to a different plan which might better benefit your budget and healthcare needs.
The one page guide to the Health Insurance Marketplace (also known as the health insurance “exchange”) provides helpful details regarding who is eligible to use the Marketplace; relevant dates and deadlines; and important steps to get started.
As stated on the HHS website, now is the time for people to “Join the millions of people who have found quality coverage through HealthCare.gov and help spread the word – there’s a role each of us can play to make sure as many Americans as possible have the peace of mind that comes from quality, affordable health insurance.”
