The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH) has a terrific educational campaign titled “Aim for a Healthy Weight”. As we all know, reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is important for overall health and can help us prevent and control many diseases and conditions.
When we are overweight or obese, we are at higher risk of developing serious health problems, including heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, gallstones, breathing problems, and certain cancers. It’s important that we maintain a healthy weight because doing so helps lower our risks for developing these problems, we feel better about ourselves, and we have more energy to enjoy life!
Highlighted in this Campaign, is the “Guide to Physical Activity”. As indicated on their website:
“Physical activity is an important part of your weight management program. Most weight loss occurs because of decreased calorie intake. Sustained physical activity is most helpful in the prevention of weight regain. In addition, exercise has a benefit of reducing risks of cardiovascular disease and diabetes, beyond that produced by weight reduction alone. Start exercising slowly, and gradually increase the intensity. Trying too hard at first can lead to injury.”
Take a few minutes to peruse the various educational topics available to all on “Aim for a Health Weight” … and good luck to you in your healthy weight efforts. We all need to celebrate good health and this is one part of that puzzle to achieving maximum healthiness for ourselves and our loved ones!
